正文

In US, building an AI data center has become contentious enough that local officials are receiving death threats over the decision.

Emporia, Kansas, moved 2 commission meetings online and removed public comment for safety.

Grayslake, Illinois, canceled an extended public-comment session after violent social-media posts raised safety concerns.

There were more than 500 active temporary or permanent local data-center bans by early August, up from 300-plus in late June.

Republicans now see AI data centers as an electoral liability. In a private memo to leading AI firms, the Senate Republican campaign arm says public anger over U.S. data centers is threatening the party’s chances of keeping an important Ohio seat. It says Democrats have made data centers a major part of their effort to defeat Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH), and that strategy appears to be working with public. "If voters' perceptions of data centers are not fixed quickly, the campaign against them will expand far beyond Ohio." Republicans fear data-center backlash in Ohio could spread into a nationwide AI infrastructure constraint.
