Alibaba is raising $10.2 billion in Hong Kong, and it plans to put every dollar of the proceeds into AI.
The timing is telling. Just days ago, Alibaba said revenue from its AI-related products had reached a $7.3 billion annualized run rate, and expects that figure to hit $10 billion as soon as next quarter.
Alibaba is clearly going all in on AI infrastructure. Management says the massive CapEx could pay for itself within three years, potentially even faster.
That may prove optimistic, but the bigger point is clear: Alibaba isn't treating AI as a side project anymore. It is turning AI infrastructure into one of its biggest long-term bets.
And if Alibaba can really generate a two-to-three-year payback, the debate over whether AI CapEx is sustainable could start looking very different.
Alibaba‘s Hong Kong-listed shares fell as much as 10% at Monday's open after the placement, wiping out its recent gains driven by optimism around AI and cloud demand.
