The CEO of the world's most valuable semiconductor company just told a room full of computer science grads that electricians and plumbers have a better shot than they do.
Jensen Huang at Carnegie Mellon, class of 2026: "Electricians, plumbers, iron workers, technicians, builders. This is your time."
The numbers back him up.
Randstad analyzed 150M+ US job postings. Skilled trades demand is growing 3x faster than professional desk roles. Robotics technician postings up 107%. HVAC engineers up 67%. Electricians, welders, construction workers up 18–30% since late 2022.
Meanwhile, a Stanford study found a 16% decline in early-career employment across AI-exposed jobs. Developer employment ages 22–25 dropped almost 20% from its late 2022 peak.
Top electricians earn $ 106K+. Plumbers $ 105K+. No degree, no student debt. You get paid from day one through apprenticeships.
US tech companies are spending $700B this year on data center buildout. McKinsey projects $7T globally by 2030. Every dollar of that requires humans pulling wire, laying pipe, pouring concrete. AI can't build its own infrastructure.
And the workforce isn't there. For every 100 young workers entering manufacturing, 102 are leaving.
The irony is sharp. The biggest winner of the AI era isn't the prompt engineer. It's the person who can wire a 100MW data center in the Nevada desert.
