OpenAI just announced a 50% price cut for GPT 5.6 Sol exclusively on OpenRouter and Vercel's AI Gateway. This is potentially a clever marketing ploy. Despite being a very small portion of OAI's total token volumes, OpenRouter and Vercel are disproportionately impactful because they are two of the main datasources everyone uses to estimate AI lab/model market share. If the 50% price cut is able to more than 2x token volumes for 5.6 Sol over the next month, many investors will likely naively view it as a big win for OAI vs Anthropic.
